Synaesthesia

In class we discussed about Synaesthesia and the effect is has on the audience of music. Synaesthesia is when you picture sound in your eye. This allows the audience to gain pleasure from viewing these imaginary shapes in their mind. Not only in class did we discuss about how the audience can gain pleasure out of it, but we also discussed how using visual effects that look like Synaesthesia can have a good impact on our music video when it comes to editing.

Also in lesson I learned that sometimes in music videos and on software such as windows media player (when playing a sound track/piece of music on the software) we can see these effects that have been inputted into a music video or when it's being used on a piece of music playing software such as windows media player. Another thing that I noticed when it came to Synaesthesia is when the beat was louder, the shapes would be larger and when the music was more quieter the shapes would be smaller. I also noticed that the shapes would move faster if the beat was fast and slower if the beat was slow.

I am going to show you some examples of Synaesthesia in music videos and how it impacts in a music video. Here is my first example of Synaesthesia used in a music video. The music video is called Dada Life - Feed the Dada.

The music video starts off with the introduction beat and vocals and there's not much going on at the beginning. After the woman and man look at each other, the beat really kicks in. This is when you see Synaesthesia. We know this because the movement of the man dancing follows the loud beat of the music. The shaking and disorientated effect makes the audience feel that the sound has a loud bass to it and the movement of the dancing man emphasizes the bass of the song. The song then soothes back into the more quiet beat and when the song gets to 2:22, the repetitive "dada" is shown with a flicker effect switching between both of the artists who are lip syncing the lyrics. The flicker effect is used to express the fast motion of the lyrics. After the flicker effect has been used, it goes back to the beat and this time, there's a lot more people dancing in sync with the beat which has been done with the use of slow motion and speed ups. I think overall, Dada Life - Feed the Dada is a good example  to express synaesthesia as it is clear where synaesthesia is used and the audience are fully aware and clear of the parts this song uses it. Because of this, this makes the audience feel like they're in the song and gain pleasure from the synaesthesia used.
