Album Cover Art and Digipaks

Here are some album covers that I have looked at during my research. I have a range of album covers from rock artist album covers to rap. I have a range of album CD covers from various of artist and also cover album art from record classics. I have looked at some of these examples as in my A2 coursework, I will have to create a digi-pak for the band/start that my group is going to make a music video on. This 'digi-pak' will be like other album arts which promote the band/star. Depending on the genre of the band or star, I will have to create an album cover suitable for that artist which will be appealing and attracting to the target audience of the piece of music.

Here are some examples of the CD album art covers that I have found in my research to give me an idea of what designs and art work I should be thinking about when creating an album cover for my chose music video. Of course some of the albums might not relate to the genre of music that my chosen music video will finalize to be, but it does give me an idea of what is to expected on an album front cover.

As you can see on some of these album covers, the artist themselves are shown (Madonna, Rihanna, Seal Paul and Kylie) on the front cover and are showing a star image of them and the album covers either show the star as "sexy" or shown with "style". This may have been purposely done so the audience have an understanding of what the artist looks like and could recognize the artist the second time the audience sees them. It may also have been done for audience attraction. As for the other album covers I have (Seether, Rise Against, Avenged Sevenfold and Linkin Park) they're bands and do not show any of the band artists on the front of the cover. This is because majority of the bands are known for their band name and not by the name of the lead singer and so on. This might have been done purposely because the band wants their audience to know the name of the band and then research more into the band to find out the artists names.


Here are some digipaks that I have found within my research. The two digipaks that I have found are the alternative band Gorillaz and the metal band Metallica.

Gorillaz are an alternative rock band that are well known by many people. The album/digipak that I am going to talk about is the Demon Days album. As you can see on the front of the album cover are cartoons. For some people, they will recognize these cartoons as I have seen in the Gorillaz music videos. As you can see by the cover of the album, this band are not too heavy in music such as metal bands (slipknot, avenged sevenfold) because of the use of the cartoons they've used. The clothing that the cartoons are weather are casual clothing, hats and glasses.

  Here's a digipak from the band Metallica. Metallica are a metal band that have been around for some time now and as you can see in the digipak, there are many features that have been included in the pack. The colors that have been used in the digipak are mostly blacks and whites which are normally the colors that are used for metal/rock album art. The use of dark colors are just as similar to the stereotyping of metal heads who normally dress up in black leather.
